Watering Orchids

Overwatering orchids is the number one reason why many orchid plants prematurely die.  Orchids require very little water and some even prefer to dry out between waterings.  When in doubt, don't water.

Most of the orchids purchase in the local stores, garden centers and nurseries are planted in "Spagnum Moss" which is a very good media and one that retains a lot of water.  A good rule of thumb is to dig into the moss about 1/2" to 3/4"  to feel the moisture content, since the top layer can be dry, but water is still inside. If it's humid to wet it's okay.  If you feel it's dry add 2 to 4 ounces of fresh water depending on the pot size. Phalaenopsis will require watering about 2 to 3 times a week during the summer months, less when is colder.

If your orchid plant has been replanted to a bark media mix (highly recomended), then you can water your plant more frequently as the media does not retain moisture as the spagnum moss does.

However, always keep your plant in a bright area, but away from direct sunlight and a good airflow from the outdoors or a fan and you orchids will love it.

An Orchid plant should not be a one time, enjoy while it last and out the window gift.  It's not like a flower bouquet, or a rose flower arrangement, it's an orchid plant!!  The best rewards usually come in the following years where they can extend to give off multiple stems with multiple shoots and many flower buds. 

Caring for the plant is fairly simple for a Phalaenopsis or Moth Orchid like this one.  After the orchid looses it's last flower, cut the stem at about an inch from the base of the plant.  Seal the cut area on the plant with a little cinnamon and place in a less lighted area in the house or if outdoors where it gets weak light.  Keep watering it as usual, about 2 to 3 ounces once per week, in the summer twice per week.  Do not over water! If uncertain if it needs water, don't water.  Orchids prefer to go pretty dry before re-watering.

Clean the leaves, enjoy it's growth and within a few months you should start to see a new stem imerging, maybe 2.  Start fertilizing at this point every 2 weeks and move plant to a better lighted area.  Never in direct sunlight.  In about 8 to 10 months after you cut the stem you should be rewarded for your well earned efforts!!

1. Water: 1/3 cup of fresh water twice per week.
2. Light: Indirect lighting from a window or outdoors.  Never in direct sunlight.
3. Temperatures:  Between 55 to 85 degrees.
4. Air Circulation:  Place in an area were it can receive some flow of air.
